PASTOR’S “HUDDLES”

On Sunday mornings at 10:30a (after the 9:00a worship service), Pastor Bill Hartley will be “huddling” with the people of Fountain of Life to talk seriously about the hallmarks of our classical Christian tradition.

February 2 – Historical Worship – how the people of God have been prescribed to worship through the ages, and how our worship today should continue to be theologically, biblically crafted.

February 9 – What We DO in Worship – our classical Christian liturgy is a beautiful thing … do you know that? We’ll walk through it together, explaining the vital importance of each element, and how this directs our singing, proclaiming, standing, sitting, kneeling, etc.

February 16 – The Eucharist – …or “Lord’s Supper”, or “communion”. This sacrament is of the utmost importance in our classical Christian tradition. Why? Come with your questions!…

February 23 – Absolution – so much more than an insipid “have to” in our liturgy … it is the font of our worship joy! Why do so few churches practice absolution, and why are we so committed to it?

March 2 – Baptism – so much more than a “christening” of our babies! We’ll look at how baptism has been viewed Biblically through the ages, and why, when we have a shared understanding about it, it becomes the center of our evangelism, discipleship and worship!

March 9 – Importance of Heritage – Martin Luther wasn’t trying to start a new movement. He was trying to be faithful to his heritage, and continue that tradition! As Lutherans, we go back all the way to the New Testament church. Come get reconnected to the “communion of the saints!”

March 16 – Theology 1: Commitment to Grace. “Justification by grace through faith” is a hallmark theological principle of our tradition. Churches tend to abandon this idea, and when they do, bad things happen. Our tradition emphasizes and protects this truth.

March 23 – Theology 2: Commitment to Law/Gospel. Luther calls the differentiation of law and gospel the most critical doctrine needed for understanding the Bible — and the hardest interpretive principle to both understand and practice. Do you know it? Do you practice it? This is at the root of our evangelism, so please come and learn more!

March 30 – Theology 3: Commitment to the Word – “Sola Scriptura” — the Bible alone as authoritative — was the cry of the Lutheran Reformation. We have always emphasized the importance of the Word! How does that translate to our worship, our programs, and our personal devotional life?

April 6 – Classical Christian Leadership. It’s been said that, in the contemporary church, if you can talk in complete sentences, play the guitar, and have a hip wardrobe, you can be a pastor. Not so in our tradition! We take leadership very, very seriously.

April 13 – Our International Family. This Sunday, less than a million Lutherans will worship in our LCMS churches. There will be over 6,000,000 worship in our sister churches around the world. We are more an international than a U.S. fellowship! We do well to let this reality encourage, equip and affect our local ministry!
